I first met Aine when we played in the school orchestra together in Carraig na bhFear! Roll on twenty years later and I am photographing her wonderful wedding! The weather was a photographers dream on Aine and Pats wedding day. No wind, mild with cloud cover!

I met Pat early in the morning for some photos at Watergrasshill GAA pitch. I was expecting to just meet Pat and his groomsmen only to be surprised to be faced with almost a full team of hurlers keen to get a puc around going! I figured from that turnout that Pat must be a key member of the club, which became clear during the entertaining speeches.

The ceremony was held in Carrignavar church. It was nice to see familiar faces of people I would have known in secondary school including the celebrant Fr Terry who was our school chaplain.

With the wedding on only the day after the shortest day of the year, we agreed to head straight for Springfort Hall after the ceremony to avail of the grounds and daylight for photos.

It was a great day full of fun and laughter. Aine and Pat were very relaxed and really easy going making it such a joy and a privalege to capture their special day. Thank you both for trusting me and best wishes on your married lives together.

A wedding at a castle makes for a great fairytale! Keara and Tom celebrated a magical day at the stunning Castle Leslie Estate in Monaghan. I was privileged to get the honour of capturing the day from morning preparations until everyone danced the night away! The ceremony was held in the beautiful church in Bailieborough, Cavan. It was the perfect lead up to Christmas with the short daylight hours and magical Canopy lights in the reception room provided by Event Planner NI.

Keara wore a stunning dress from Ivory & Pearl while Tom was looking very sharp wearing his Louis Copeland suit. Keara's bridesmaids looked beautiful dressed by Folkster while Tom's groomsmen were handsome in their Aston Formal Wear suits. Flowers on the day were provided by AbFab flowers with the very impressive cake created by Catherine McKeon.

The dancefloor was in full swing to the music of Pink Champagne.

It was my first time working with Hitched Films who were documenting the day on film. Eoin and Sue were a joy to work alongside and their work is always stunning!

Jess & Seán

Jess and Seán had a wonderful wedding at Barnabrow House just outside Cork City. Jess works at Fota Wildlife Park and Seán works as a primary school teacher. They say never work with children or animals and they happen to be working with both!

The weather gods were looking down on us and we had great conditions for capturing special images. I first met Seán through traditional Irish music sessions in Cork and we have met many times over the years at various music events so it was an honour to be asked to capture their special day.

Jess wore a beautiful dress from Vows in Blarney and she made her own unique flower bouquets. Seán looked very sharp in his suit from Morley's in Cork.

Jess and her bridesmaids were very relaxed preparing beside the water at their home in Cobh. Make-up was provided by Jess' sister Róisín Leahy.

The cake was a spectacular creation by Deanna O’Sullivan. They kept the music traditional with the energetic group 'Poc ar Buille' keeping the dance floor full!

Killarney is always a lovely place to spend a wedding day! Siobhan and Chris had a lovely wedding day in Muckross Park Hotel in Killarney. They were both very relaxed and that feeling was present throughout the day. Siobhán wore a dress from Ti adora. Her lovely fresh and colourful flowers were supplied locally by Blooms of Killarney. The very impressive cake was created by O'Carroll's cakes, who are also based in Killarney. Hair was by D'arcy's with make-up by Coco's in Ballincollig. They danced the night away to Oceans Band.

Here's some photos from another recent wedding. Carol and Will are two of the nicest and kindest people one could me. It was an absolute pleasure to capture their wedding day.

June 30th 2018 must have been one of the hottest days on record! So much so, the vintage wedding car couldn't deal with the heat and failed to move after the ceremony in Nenagh despite our best efforts with jump leads. It might have been a blessing in disguise as Carol and Will were able to enjoy the comfort of my air conditioned car from Nenagh to The Devon Arms in Adare! You never know what surprises can come on a wedding day!

I had car trouble myself with a flat tire the morning of the wedding. Will's family came to the rescue when a kind neighbour came with a compressor to get my tire enough air to get through the day! Despite the minor set backs, it was a super day!

I've been able to get back working with my cameras again over the Easter break from school. I've upgraded some camera equipment recently so I was keen to get to experiment and practice with them. I didn't have to look very far to find a subject to make a short film about; My brother John. John has been slacklining for a few years now. He's always on the look out for a good pair of trees that would accommodate his high line walking interest.
Below is the final film I put together.

Wedding Album

They are the only company I use as I believe that investing in a higher end product will stand the test of time. The images from the wedding day can be enjoyed for many many years.

Rachel and Alan choose the classic matted 12" x 12" Queensberry album with a cover material of silk. The pages are mounted pagemount style (ie with the photos trimmed to fit inside the card mat to expose the core page) with ivory mats and core pages. Supplied in a soft velvet bag, and presentation box.

Images were printed on Kodak Endura Lustre photographic paper with traditional silver halide technology.

They also choose two 5" flushmount parent copies.

Headshot-Tim Creed

Tim Creed I first met Tim Creed while on family summer holidays when I was about 14 years old in Ventry, county Kerry. Myself, along with my older brothers and Tim managed to infiltrate an Irish summer college ceili. We danced the night away leis na gcailíní until we were spotted by the ceannaire and shown the exit door, 'amach libh! Since those days, we have met from time to time over the years.

Tim is fast becoming a successful Irish actor appearing on many films and shows on television. He is developing a long list of achievements on his acting cv.
We recently happened to meet by chance near the same spot we first met, this time in Ballyferriter. I mentioned to him about working on his headshot as it's an area of photography I haven't had a lot of experience in. I have done headshots for people but not with actors. Tim was very obliging about the idea.
We met up at his house and after fine tuning the lighting and camera settings we went about getting to this final image.

It was a very interesting experience for me to learn from Tim how to best try and capture the essence of a person in one single picture. Casting agents can scan through a catalog of actors headshots when filling parts. Your headshot gives you one split second the capture their eye and jump off the page. This means that it's not just a case of standing in front of the camera and taking the shot. Subtle posing, exposure, lighting along with that glint in the eye all can lead to a successful headshot.

Having music playing the actor likes, having a chat over a cup of tea and getting to know each other before ever taking a photograph will all lead to the actor feeling comfortable in front of the lens and with a stranger trying the expose their vulnerabilities in front of a camera.

The whole process can last up to three hours to try get that one split second moment in time.

Aoife Granville plays a Solen Lesouef Flute

This is a video that I shot at the beautiful An Díseart in Dingle just this week. Aoife Granville is a flute player from Dingle in county Kerry. The flute is made by Solen Lesouef and she has been playing it since around September. The tunes are 'An Buachaillín Donn' and a slide from the playing of Julia Clifford called 'She didn't dance and dance'.

Steve Cooney Portrait

I attended a three day guitar workshop that Steve Cooney gave in Ballyferriter during the Scoil Cheoil an Earraigh music festival in February earlier in the year. It was a an amazing three days listening to him speak about life, music, the guitar and to hear him play some beautiful airs. I have been an admirer of Steve Cooney's playing for many years so to spend this time with him was very special. He enlightened me more to my approach to the guitar, music and accompanying music rather than learning particular chords or tunings.

From the first day I really wanted to take his portrait. When I was meant to be focusing on what we were doing with the guitar, I found myself looking around the room for the best place for a portrait. I watched the movement of the sun for the first two days and saw where it was shining in the room at different times during the days. After the second day I plucked up the courage to ask him if he would mind me taking his photograph the following day. I was delighted when he kindly obliged me the opportunity.

When the moment came, I only had about 20 seconds to capture it. I knew exactly what background I wanted, a plain wall in a bit of shadow. I was lucky that it was cloudy so the suns light was diffused coming in through the window to act as a key light for the side of his face. I had my settings dialled in after a quick test shot on a chair. I wanted a shallow depth of field with focus on his eyes so I choose and aperture of f/3,5. "One shot, do not miss your chance to blow. This opportunity comes once in a lifetime".

I was very happy with the result!
